intervener
An Intervener works one-on-one with our students and campers and receives specialized training and skills in deafblindness. Interveners help students with deafblindness and/or other disabilities gather information, learn concepts & skills, develop communication & language, and establish relationships that lead to greater independence. Interveners assist students throughout the entire school day, especially during academics and therapy sessions and will collaborate with teachers and therapists for their student’s school program.
At Camp ImpAACt, interveners may lead a small group of counselors and provide guidance and support. Some interveners may also receive specialized training that will allow them to provide evaluations as well.
Classroom assistant
Classroom Assistants are essential in making sure our School Program and Camp ImpAACt run efficiently. They assist the teachers and interveners with students as needed, offering a lot of flexibility and chances to learn new skills. They will help prepare materials, assist with lunches and lessons for students and help keep the Center running smoothly on a day-to-day basis.
For camp, a classroom assistant may lead a group of counselors, offer one-on-one assistance with a camper or assist the camp directors with programming and activities.
Classroom assistants will receive training on the communication needs of the students, but prior experience is always a plus.
Therapists
Therapists (physical, occupational, speech-language, etc…) are just as necessary to our programs as the educators. Whether on staff or contracted, therapists at Ellis work with our students and campers directly through individualized or group sessions. Outside of therapy sessions, they will collaborate with interveners, teachers, and families on the students’ therapy program and provide recommendations for actions outside of scheduled therapy time.
Therapists may also assist with our evaluation services and community education events as they have specialized training or insight into our community and their needs.
